Time doesn't wait, and while you may feel young at heart, your fertility follows its own clock. For single women and female same-sex couples, legal limits on who can use donor sperm can add another hurdle. But freezing your eggs doesn't have to be the end of the story. You have plans and you have the means, so why choose between them?
Freezing your eggs in Taiwan and then exporting them to a fertility clinic overseas lets you protect your fertility now and start your family later, wherever the law and your plans allow.
What Can You Do After Exporting Your Frozen Eggs?
Once your eggs arrive at an overseas fertility clinic, they can be used for IVF in three main ways:
- Donor sperm, carrying the pregnancy yourself: your eggs are fertilized with donor sperm and you carry the pregnancy.
- Reciprocal IVF with donor sperm: for female couples, one partner's eggs are fertilized with donor sperm and the other partner carries the pregnancy.
- Donor sperm with a gestational surrogate: your embryos are transferred to a surrogate who carries the pregnancy for you.
How Do You Export Your Eggs If You Haven't Frozen Them Yet? 6 Steps
If you haven't frozen your eggs yet, exporting them takes six steps: an initial consultation, choosing an overseas clinic, egg retrieval, paperwork, shipping and treatment overseas.
- Initial consultation
- Find an overseas fertility clinic
- Start treatment
- Prepare your documents
- Ship your eggs overseas
- Continue treatment overseas
Step 1: Initial Consultation (AMH Test and Egg Freezing Assessment)
Your first visit includes an AMH test and an egg freezing assessment. If you'd like to export your eggs soon, we recommend you start looking for an overseas fertility clinic at this stage.
Step 2: Find an Overseas Fertility Clinic
Choose the clinic you'd like to work with and make first contact. We're happy to share our experience with clinics our patients have exported to. If you're not planning to export soon, simply complete egg freezing as usual. You can arrange the export later.
Step 3: Start Treatment
We collect your eggs through a standard egg freezing cycle. Any tests your overseas clinic requires are done during the same egg retrieval cycle.
Step 4: Prepare Your Documents
Once your eggs have been collected, you'll prepare the documents needed for export:
- For the overseas clinic: egg or sperm reports, plus the test reports the clinic requires.
- For the application in Taiwan: your Taiwan ID card (if you have one), passport, power of attorney, application form or affidavit, and the import permit issued by the receiving country, authenticated by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO).
Step 5: Ship Your Eggs Overseas
After Taiwan's Health Promotion Administration (HPA) issues its official export approval, your eggs are shipped to the overseas clinic.
Step 6: Continue Treatment Overseas
At the overseas clinic, your eggs are thawed and fertilized, and the resulting embryos are transferred:
- Thawing and fertilization
- Embryo development
- Embryo transfer
- Waiting for your baby to arrive!

What If You've Already Frozen Your Eggs?
If your eggs are already frozen, contact the overseas fertility clinic you'd like to use. Once the clinic confirms it can accept your eggs, you can arrange any tests it requires and start preparing your documents.
Frequently Asked Questions About Exporting Frozen Eggs
My US Surrogacy Clinic Asks for an "FDA Kit." What Is It?
An FDA kit is a set of infectious disease tests required by most US fertility clinics. FDA stands for the US Food and Drug Administration. To protect the surrogate and clinic staff, most US fertility clinics require FDA testing. It involves a blood test and a urine test that screen for common infectious diseases, and the samples must be analyzed by a lab approved by your US clinic.
What If FDA Testing Isn't Done Before Egg Retrieval?
Some US clinics may accept testing after egg retrieval, but not all do, as rules vary from state to state. If testing isn't arranged in advance, your options may be limited later. If you're considering US surrogacy, let us know before your egg retrieval cycle starts.
Can You Export Frozen Eggs to Countries Other Than the US?
Yes. Most exports go to the US, but you can ship your eggs to other countries too. Find a local fertility clinic first and check whether it needs any additional tests and when they must be done. Requirements depend on local law and the clinic. For example, EU countries generally require hepatitis B and C test results from before egg retrieval. Let us know early, and the document process will be much the same.
